Asian Markets Rally as US Inflation Data Cools Rate Hike Expectations

Softer consumer price growth in the United States has led investors to pull back on bets for an imminent Federal Reserve interest rate increase.

Asian stock markets saw a broad rally on Thursday as encouraging US inflation figures provided relief to global investors. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan climbed 0.97%, with South Korean markets leading the charge by jumping 4.4%. Japan’s Nikkei index also saw a significant gain of 1.86%.

The market optimism follows the release of US consumer price data, which showed a modest 0.1% increase for July. This result, which aligned with market expectations, suggests that the arguments for a further interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve next month may be weakening. According to the original publisher, money markets now reflect a 40% probability of a rate hike, a notable decline from the 54% likelihood predicted just one week ago.

Despite the positive sentiment in equity markets, the global commodities landscape remains tense. Oil prices in Asia eased slightly, with US crude falling 0.83% to US$82.58 per barrel and Brent crude dropping 0.71% to US$88.35 per barrel. These prices continue to hover near elevated levels as Washington and Tehran remain deadlocked in efforts to address ongoing issues related to the Gulf war.

Looking ahead, analysts suggest that market volatility may persist through the coming month. With August inflation data expected before the next Federal Open Market Committee meeting, strategists at SMBC Nikko Securities noted that both the Fed and investors will likely monitor incoming economic data closely to gauge the trajectory of future monetary policy.

For Malaysian investors, shifts in Federal Reserve policy are significant as they influence the value of the ringgit and the cost of foreign capital. When the prospect of US rate hikes diminishes, it often reduces pressure on emerging market currencies, potentially providing more stability for local financial planning and international trade activities.
