BMW Malaysia and Universiti Malaya Launch Second-Life EV Battery Charging Hubs
Retired electric vehicle batteries find new purpose as mobile charging stations for students and rural electrification efforts.

BMW Malaysia and Universiti Malaya have officially launched on-campus mobile device charging stations powered by Battery Energy Storage Systems. These systems are unique because they are constructed using retired batteries sourced from BMW fully electric and plug-in hybrid models. The initiative marks a significant step in repurposing automotive hardware for sustainable public infrastructure.
The first of these stations has been deployed at UM Sentral, which serves as the university’s primary bus hub. According to the original publisher, the station is equipped with four USB cables designed for smartphone charging, though prototypes showcased during a May media briefing demonstrated sufficient capacity to power an average laptop. To further enhance energy independence, the bus station has been fitted with rooftop solar panels that charge the system.
This project was conceived and executed by Universiti Malaya students under the direct guidance of researchers from the university’s Power Energy Dedicated Advanced Centre. The effort is part of a broader, long-term collaboration titled BMW Malaysia RE:GENERATE x Universiti Malaya. Beyond the immediate campus applications, the partnership aims to explore the broader potential of second-life EV batteries for rural electrification.
The integration of sustainable energy solutions into local infrastructure is increasingly relevant as Malaysia seeks to manage the growing lifecycle of electric vehicle components. By converting end-of-life battery packs into functional energy storage for public areas, this collaboration provides a scalable model for circular economy practices within the local academic and transport sectors. This initiative highlights how engineering expertise can be leveraged to address both waste management and energy accessibility for underserved communities.
