Fahmi Fadzil Names Facebook Top Platform for Scams in Malaysia

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has identified Facebook as the primary source of online scams reported by Malaysians.

Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil has publicly criticized major social media platforms regarding their role in the prevalence of online scams targeting Malaysian users. During a recent briefing, he suggested that authorities should establish an annual award to identify which digital platforms are most responsible for generating harmful content, specifically targeting those that facilitate fraudulent activities.

According to data shared during the announcement, Facebook is the leading platform for illicit activity, accounting for 53 percent of all reported scam content. The data, as reported by the original publisher, indicates that TikTok follows as the second most frequent source, contributing to 39 percent of the reports. Threads rounds out the list, representing 5 percent of the documented scam content.

The Minister shared these findings while discussing broader issues regarding platform accountability and the safety of users in the digital landscape. By highlighting these specific percentages, the Ministry aims to draw attention to the high volume of fraudulent content circulating on these popular social media channels.

The identification of these figures is intended to pressure digital platforms to improve their content moderation and security measures. For Malaysian users, this data serves as a critical indicator of the risks associated with daily social media usage, particularly as these platforms become the primary vehicles for deceptive financial schemes. The government continues to emphasize the need for transparency and better oversight from tech companies to protect the public from an increasing number of online threats.
