Gentari Launches Penang EV Charging Discount Campaign Running Until November

Electric vehicle owners can enjoy a 15 percent price reduction at 21 Gentari charging stations across Penang through the end of November.

Gentari has officially launched its "Penang Lagi!" campaign, offering a 15 percent discount on electric vehicle (EV) charging across 21 selected locations in Penang. The promotion, which covers charging points on both the island and the mainland, is available to all registered users of the Gentari Go mobile application starting from 28 August 2026 until 30 November 2026.

According to the original publisher, the discount applies to an unlimited number of charging sessions throughout the three-month campaign period. To qualify for the reduced rate, users are required to initiate their charging session directly through the Gentari Go app. While the discount is designed to apply automatically upon the selection of a participating charger, users also have the option to manually input the promo code "PENANG15" if the automated adjustment does not trigger before activation.

There is a minimum expenditure requirement of RM20 per charging session for the 15 percent discount to be valid. For context, Gentari’s DC chargers—including those managed in collaboration with the Penang Island City Council (MBPP)—typically operate at a rate of RM1.60 per kWh. Under this promotion, the effective cost drops to approximately RM1.36 per kWh. It is important to note that this discount cannot be combined with existing subscription plans or other concurrent promotional offers.

For Malaysian EV owners, this initiative provides a tangible reduction in the cost of long-distance travel, particularly for those planning trips to the northern region. As Malaysia maintains a headline inflation rate of 1.8 percent as of July 2026, any measure that lowers the cost of essential mobility helps households manage their discretionary spending. The campaign effectively lowers the per-kilometer cost of operation, positioning EV travel as a more competitive alternative to internal combustion engine vehicles, which are currently facing fluctuating fuel prices such as the RM3.82 unsubsidised rate for RON95.

For the broader Malaysian workforce and the logistics sector, such incentives demonstrate a push to lower the barriers to EV adoption. With the national unemployment rate holding steady at 3.0 percent as of May 2026, the growth of the green technology sector remains a focal point for economic diversification. By incentivizing the usage of public charging infrastructure, Gentari is attempting to address "range anxiety" while normalizing the habit of grid-based charging among daily commuters in highly developed urban centers like Penang.

This campaign arrives amid a backdrop of robust national economic performance, with real GDP growth reaching 6.0 percent year-on-year in the most recent quarter. The expansion of charging networks and the deployment of targeted price incentives suggest that industry players are shifting their focus from purely infrastructure rollout to encouraging high-frequency utilization of existing assets. Observing how such localized discounts influence charging behavior at high-traffic hubs will likely inform how Gentari and its competitors structure their pricing models moving forward.

The long-term impact of this campaign on broader national charging rates remains to be seen. While Gentari has outlined the mechanics of the "Penang Lagi!" promotion, it is currently unconfirmed whether similar regional campaigns will be rolled out to other states or if this strategy will eventually be integrated into a permanent tier-based pricing structure for frequent users. Owners of EVs should verify their specific charging location through the Gentari Go app to ensure it is among the 21 participating sites before planning their charging stops.
