Google Maps Launches Generative AI Search Capabilities in Malaysia

Google has officially begun the rollout of its AI-powered Ask Maps feature in Malaysia, allowing users to interact with the platform using full sentences rather than relying on traditional keyword searches. The feature, which leverages Gemini technology, is currently being distributed to users in stages, meaning availability may vary across different accounts as the update spreads.

According to the original publisher, this expansion brings the tool to Malaysia as part of a wider rollout spanning more than 160 countries and territories. Originally debuted in the United States and India in March 2026, the tool aims to streamline how users search for locations and plan routes by interpreting natural language descriptions. Users can now tap the Ask Maps button beneath the search bar on mobile devices or access it via the menu on desktop computers.

The functionality allows for more intuitive searching, such as asking the system to find a quiet restaurant for a conversation or requesting a scenic route for a commute. Beyond simple searches, Ask Maps provides real-time information regarding road conditions, including data on crashes or construction. It also offers insights into how busy a location is before a user decides to depart. The service is designed to become more personalized over time by accounting for a user’s previous conversations and stated preferences.

However, the rollout in Malaysia is not a complete feature set. Several capabilities showcased during the initial global announcement remain restricted. For instance, integrated food ordering through the Ask Maps interface is currently reserved exclusively for users in the United States.

This update marks a significant shift in how Malaysians interact with digital mapping tools, moving away from rigid search inputs toward a more conversational user experience.
