Limited-Run 449 PS BYD Atto 3 Performance Hits Malaysian Market
BYD introduces an exclusive all-wheel-drive variant of its popular electric SUV, limited to just 69 units nationwide.

Three months after the launch of the facelifted Atto 3, BYD has officially introduced a high-performance variant to the Malaysian market, offering all-wheel-drive capabilities and significant power upgrades. Priced at RM149,800, this limited-run model is restricted to a production run of only 69 units to commemorate Malaysia’s 69th year of independence.
According to the original publisher, the Performance variant serves as the new flagship for the C-segment electric SUV lineup. It sits above the existing Premium variant, which retails for RM138,800, and the base Ultra model at RM125,800. The pricing reflects a premium of RM11,000 and RM24,000 over the respective lower-tier models, though buyers are incentivized with an exclusive launch package.
The mechanical heart of the Performance variant is a dual-motor setup. While it retains the 313 PS and 380 Nm rear motor introduced in the recent Evo overhaul, it adds a front-axle motor that contributes an additional 136 PS and 180 Nm. This brings the total system output to a substantial 449 PS and 560 Nm of torque. Consequently, the vehicle’s acceleration is significantly improved, achieving a zero to 100 km/h sprint time of just 4.0 seconds—a full 1.5 seconds faster than the Premium variant.
The vehicle retains the 74.88 kWh Blade LFP battery found in its siblings. However, the added performance and weight of the dual-motor configuration result in a minor trade-off in efficiency, with the WLTP-rated range reduced to 470 km. Regarding after-sales support, BYD maintains its standard six-year or 150,000 km vehicle warranty, alongside an eight-year or 160,000 km warranty specifically for the battery and motor.
For the Malaysian consumer, this launch signals a shift in how EV buyers weigh trade-offs between performance and utility. The inclusion of an exclusive package—either a free wallbox charger with installation or a six-year service package—is designed to lower the total cost of ownership. For those residing in strata properties where installing a dedicated wallbox may be complex, the service package alternative provides a pragmatic choice, though the overtrade support for this variant is noticeably lower than the RM10,000 offered for the non-Performance models at their launch.
The financial landscape for this purchase comes against a backdrop of resilient local economic growth, with the latest data showing a real GDP expansion of 6.0% year-on-year. While the unemployment rate remains low at 3.0%, the significant price gap between the base and performance models highlights the widening spectrum of the local EV market. As fuel prices remain a point of contention—with unsubsidized petrol currently at RM4.02—the appeal of high-performance EVs becomes increasingly tied to both the novelty of instant torque and the long-term predictability of electricity costs versus volatile pump prices.
The release of the Performance model underscores BYD's strategy to maintain momentum in the local market. By limiting availability to 69 units, the manufacturer creates a sense of scarcity that may appeal to enthusiasts, potentially serving as a test of the ceiling for consumer willingness to pay for high-performance electric SUVs. This move follows a period of rapid product iteration, suggesting the brand intends to occupy both the mass-market and performance-niche segments simultaneously.
It remains to be seen if the high demand for this limited batch will prompt BYD to introduce a permanent all-wheel-drive option in the future. Additionally, while the technical specifications have been confirmed, the exact waiting periods for the 69 units and whether these orders will impact the delivery timelines of the standard Atto 3 variants remain unconfirmed.
