MG Malaysia Launches Affordable CKD MG S5 EV Starting At RM100,900
The new entry-level Comfort variant lowers the barrier to entry for local EV buyers with competitive pricing and launch incentives.

MG Malaysia has officially expanded its locally assembled (CKD) MG S5 EV lineup with the introduction of the new Comfort (COM) variant, now available for as low as RM100,900 with limited-time launch rebates. Produced at EPMB’s plant in Melaka, this base model serves as a more accessible alternative to the higher-spec LUX variant that previously spearheaded the brand’s local assembly efforts.
According to the original publisher, the base retail price for the MG S5 EV CKD COM is RM103,900. However, a RM3,000 launch rebate brings the price down to RM100,900 for early buyers. As an added incentive, MG Malaysia is bundling the vehicle with a free AC wallbox charger, streamlining the home-charging setup process for new EV owners.
The COM variant distinguishes itself aesthetically through a set of blacked-out wheels, departing from the silver-outlined wheels found on the LUX trim. Customers can select from two primary colourways: Silver and Grey. Despite the lower price point, the manufacturer has maintained a robust warranty package, offering a 7-year or 150,000km vehicle warranty, alongside an 8-year or 180,000km warranty for the high-voltage battery and an 8-year or 160,000km warranty for the drive motor.
For Malaysian consumers, this launch signals a significant shift in the affordability of electric mobility. With the unsubsidised price of petrol currently hovering at RM3.77 per litre, the decision to pivot toward an EV becomes increasingly logical for daily commuters looking to mitigate fuel expenditure. A starting price near the RM100,000 mark positions the MG S5 EV COM as a highly competitive option for middle-income households, particularly those who may have been deterred by the higher entry costs of premium EV models.
Furthermore, the shift toward local assembly (CKD) benefits the broader Malaysian economy by fostering domestic manufacturing capabilities. With the national unemployment rate holding steady at 3.0% as of May 2026, the continued expansion of the EPMB plant in Melaka represents a vital contribution to the automotive sector’s employment ecosystem, potentially supporting local supply chains and technical workforce development.
The launch of this base variant arrives against a backdrop of resilient national economic performance, with real GDP growth currently at 6.0%. While headline inflation remains controlled at 1.8%, the introduction of a lower-priced EV provides a strategic hedge for consumers against the fluctuating costs of conventional energy. For the average driver, this suggests that the threshold for entering the electric vehicle market is becoming increasingly aligned with the cost of internal combustion engine equivalents.
This development follows the earlier introduction of the LUX variant and suggests a deliberate strategy by MG Malaysia to capture a larger share of the market by diversifying its price tiers. As the EV transition accelerates, manufacturers are clearly prioritising local assembly to manage costs and provide more attractive packages to price-sensitive Malaysian buyers.
The industry will likely watch how this aggressive pricing strategy impacts the broader passenger vehicle segment in the coming months. It remains unconfirmed whether MG Malaysia plans to introduce additional feature-set tiers or further expand its CKD production capacity to meet potential surges in demand.
