MyIPO Aims To Bridge Malaysia’s Innovation Commercialisation Gap

The Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia is prioritising the transformation of domestic research into market-ready products to improve the nation's innovation output rankings.

The Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) is taking steps to address a significant disparity between Malaysia’s research capabilities and the actual commercialisation of those findings. While the nation currently holds a strong position in terms of innovation inputs, officials identify a clear need to improve the conversion of these research efforts into tangible, market-ready innovations.

According to data cited by the original publisher, Malaysia is ranked 30th globally for innovation inputs. However, the country’s ranking for innovation outputs sits lower at 39th. This gap underscores a systemic challenge in translating academic and laboratory-based work into successful products for the commercial sector.

MyIPO director-general Yusnieza Syarmila Yusoff identified the strengthening of technology transfer offices (TTOs) as a primary solution to this issue. These offices play a vital role in managing the transition of intellectual property from research institutions to the marketplace, ensuring that potential innovations are effectively protected and positioned for industrial application.

By focusing on the efficiency of TTOs, MyIPO aims to create a more robust framework for researchers and innovators. This initiative is designed to ensure that Malaysia’s investment in research yields greater economic and practical returns, narrowing the current divide between theoretical development and commercial implementation.

Addressing this gap is critical for Malaysia’s long-term technological competitiveness. Improving the ability to commercialise research will allow the country to better leverage its existing knowledge assets, potentially fostering a more dynamic environment for local innovation and ensuring that Malaysian-developed technology reaches the global market more effectively.
