OpenAI Secures Massive US Data Centre Lease Backed by Nvidia

A new 20-year agreement will establish a sprawling AI facility in Ohio powered by Nvidia technology and significant energy infrastructure investment.

OpenAI has entered into a 20-year agreement to lease a massive data centre in the United States, supported by a US$105 billion financing commitment from Nvidia. Located on the site of a former Cold War-era uranium enrichment plant in Ohio, the facility is poised to become the largest single data centre dedicated to artificial intelligence.

According to the original publisher, the site is designed to reach an eventual capacity of 8 gigawatts. The infrastructure will operate exclusively on Nvidia chips. To support the immense power requirements of such a facility, the data centre’s owner, a subsidiary called SB Energy, will invest over US$4 billion into local energy infrastructure. This effort includes the development of at least 10 gigawatts of new energy generation to ensure the centre remains operational.

As part of the project's community integration, OpenAI has committed US$40 million to support local priorities in the region. Furthermore, Nvidia is set to invest US$1.5 billion into SB Energy. While the scale of this financing is notable, Nvidia stated that the deal follows the same financial discipline used in their supply-chain management, addressing concerns regarding the circular financing practices currently prevalent in the AI sector.

The project is expected to create thousands of jobs, though it arrives amid growing scrutiny regarding the heavy electricity and water consumption associated with large-scale data centres. For the global AI landscape, this massive investment underscores the escalating dependency of AI developers on large-scale financial backing to maintain the infrastructure required for next-generation models.

For Malaysian stakeholders monitoring the tech industry, this development highlights the intense competition for energy and hardware resources globally. As local data centre investments continue to grow in Malaysia, the scale of this US-based project provides a benchmark for the level of infrastructure and capital commitment currently driving the global AI boom.
