Proton AMA05 Project Emerges as Future MPV Contender

The development of the upcoming Proton AMA05 model has been confirmed through recent disclosures regarding local automotive supply chains. The vehicle, which is part of Proton's Advanced Modular Architecture series, is reportedly under development to join the company's future product roadmap alongside other upcoming releases.

Confirmation of the project surfaced during the opening of a new chassis component assembly facility in Tanjung Malim. According to the original publisher, Peps Sanly JV—a partnership between EP Manufacturing and China's Sanly—has been contracted to produce front corner modules, subframe modules, and rear axle assemblies for the AMA05, as well as the Saga MC3 and the AMA02 SUV.

The AMA05 is widely expected to be the hybrid MPV previously alluded to in Proton’s development charts. Unlike some of its stablemates, the AMA05 is not slated to receive a pure petrol variant. Instead, the model is expected to utilize a hybrid powertrain featuring a DHT120 transmission. This dedicated hybrid system likely incorporates an electric motor capable of producing 120 kilowatts, or approximately 163 PS.

This development is significant for the Malaysian automotive market as Proton seeks to strengthen its position against established competitors in the entry-level segment. Currently, Proton lacks a direct rival to the popular MPV offerings that dominate local sales charts. By leveraging the Advanced Modular Architecture, Proton aims to expand its portfolio with a hybrid-focused model that could challenge the current market leaders. As the company continues to transition its manufacturing capabilities in Tanjung Malim, the introduction of the AMA05 represents a strategic shift toward electrification and platform sharing to drive future growth.
