Proton eMas 7 PHEV Enters Local Assembly With Massage Seat Upgrades

Proton has officially commenced local assembly (CKD) for its eMas 7 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in Malaysia. The transition was executed without a formal announcement, with updated pricing and specifications appearing on the company’s website effective August 26, 2026.

Despite the move to local production, Proton has maintained its previous pricing structure. The base Prime variant remains priced at RM105,800, while the Premium model is available for RM119,800. The range-topping Premium Plus, which features a larger battery, continues to retail at RM125,800. All prices are on-the-road without insurance. According to the original publisher, these figures include a RM4,000 launch rebate that appears to have been extended indefinitely despite its initial cap of 5,000 units.

Mechanically, the eMas 7 PHEV remains unchanged. The powertrain consists of a 99 PS/125 Nm 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine paired with a 218 PS/262 Nm front electric motor. The system utilizes a single-speed 11-in-1 dedicated hybrid transmission, delivering a total output of 262 PS and 262 Nm of torque. The Prime and Premium variants are equipped with an 18.4 kWh CATL LFP battery, offering an electric-only range of 83 km on the WLTP cycle.

While the powertrain carries over, the move to local assembly has brought a notable interior enhancement. The Premium and Premium Plus variants now come equipped with massage seats, a luxury inclusion that distinguishes these new CKD units from the earlier batches. Proton continues to offer a six-year, unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty and an eight-year/160,000 km battery warranty.

For the Malaysian consumer, this launch arrives against a backdrop of complex fuel economics. With unsubsidised RON95 currently priced at RM3.82 per litre compared to the subsidised RM2.05 under the SKPS framework, the 83 km EV range of the eMas 7 PHEV offers a tangible buffer for urban commuters looking to mitigate fuel expenditure. However, the decision not to reduce prices—contrary to the RM6,000 reduction seen with the eMas 7 EV’s local assembly shift—may be seen as a missed opportunity to lower the barrier of entry for middle-income households.

This pricing strategy likely reflects Proton’s attempt to balance the current macroeconomic climate. With Malaysia’s real GDP growth holding steady at 6.0% and an unemployment rate of 3.0%, consumer purchasing power remains resilient. However, given that headline inflation sits at 1.8%, manufacturers are under pressure to maintain margins while navigating the shift toward electrification. For investors and industry watchers, the quiet nature of this rollout suggests Proton is prioritizing supply chain stability over aggressive marketing at this stage.

The local automotive sector is currently in a state of rapid transition, with the eMas 7 series acting as a cornerstone for Proton’s electrified ambitions. This shift to local assembly is a strategic step toward fulfilling domestic manufacturing quotas and potentially positioning Malaysia as a regional hub for PHEV technology.

What remains unconfirmed is the specific production capacity allocated to the eMas 7 PHEV moving forward and whether further price adjustments will be considered as domestic manufacturing efficiencies improve.
