Proton Shatters Malaysia’s Annual EV Sales Record in Just Seven Months

The national carmaker has surpassed the previous full-year record with five months remaining in 2026.

Proton has officially set a new benchmark for the Malaysian electric vehicle market, reaching a year-to-date total of 16,458 units by the end of July 2026. This performance allowed the brand to eclipse the previous all-time record for annual EV sales in Malaysia with five months of the year still to go.

According to the latest data from the road transport department (JPJ) cited by the original publisher, Proton registered 2,928 EVs in July alone. This trajectory, largely fueled by the strong performance of the eMas 5 and eMas 7 models, puts the company on track to comfortably exceed 25,000 units by the end of the year. For comparison, the previous annual record was set by BYD in 2025, which saw 14,407 units registered over the full twelve-month period.

BYD currently holds the second position in the market with 6,901 units registered year-to-date, including 1,226 units in July. Tesla follows in third with 2,567 units, while Zeekr secures fourth place with 2,562 units. Notably, iCaur has moved into fifth place with 3,022 units, surpassing Leapmotor, which sits in sixth with 1,293 units. Other brands in the top ten include Perodua, MG, TQ Wuling, and BMW.

The remainder of the top 20 rankings features a mix of international manufacturers, including Dongfeng, Xpeng, Great Wall Motor, Denza, MINI, Porsche, Honda, smart, Volvo, and Neta. Perodua continues to ramp up its market presence, recording 109 units of the QV-E in July, bringing its year-to-date total to 318 units.

This historic milestone for Proton underscores a significant shift in the local automotive landscape as mass-market adoption of electric vehicles accelerates. By smashing a full-year record in just seven months, the national brand demonstrates the growing influence of domestic production and model availability in driving the country’s transition toward electrified transportation.
