Ringgit Gains Ground Against Greenback Following Softer US Economic Indicators
The local currency saw a marginal increase in early morning trade as market participants reacted to cooling US economic data.

The ringgit opened higher against the US dollar on Thursday morning, strengthening to 4.0905/4.0960 compared to the previous day’s closing rate of 4.0920/4.0960. This slight appreciation reflects improved market sentiment as investors digest weaker-than-expected economic indicators from the United States.
According to the original publisher, the shift in currency valuation follows a decline in the US Dollar Index, which dropped 0.18% to 99.676. Analysts pointed to several soft data points contributing to this trend, including the Automatic Data Processing (ADP) Nonfarm Employment Change, which reached 44,000 in July—falling short of the consensus estimate of 68,000. Furthermore, the US Institute for Supply Management (ISM) non-manufacturing index recorded a figure of 54.1, missing the anticipated 54.5 mark.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Afzanizam Rashid noted that Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook has signaled potential support for interest rate hikes if inflation persists. Additionally, crude oil prices remain under pressure, with Brent crude trading below US$80 per barrel amid potential developments in the Strait of Hormuz. Consequently, the ringgit is expected to trade within the range of RM4.07 to RM4.09 against the dollar for the remainder of the day.
Global market strategists suggest that the current movement in the US dollar is also influenced by broader caution, as traders adjust their positions ahead of the upcoming US non-farm payrolls report. As the market enters a 48-hour window before the release of this data, investors are actively rebalancing risk and reducing exposure.
For the Malaysian economy, the fluctuation of the ringgit against the greenback remains a critical indicator of national financial health. As the local currency responds to international monetary policy shifts and global economic sentiment, businesses and consumers alike look to these daily movements to gauge the impact on trade, import costs, and local market stability.
