Sepang Circuit Imposes Strict Vehicle Access Rules for Bahrain Grand Prix Weekend
Motorcycles are banned from entering Sepang International Circuit as part of a new traffic management initiative to alleviate congestion during the race weekend.

Motorcyclists will be barred from entering the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) premises for the duration of the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, which takes place from October 2 to 4.
According to a report by the original publisher, this move represents a significant shift in the circuit's approach to crowd management. Under a new traffic control plan coordinated with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), access to the circuit will be strictly limited to vehicles displaying valid parking stickers or official passes. This policy aims to curb the severe traffic congestion that has historically plagued the venue during major motorsport events.
SIC chief executive officer Azhan Shafriman Hanif noted that the decision follows 27 years of experience, during which unrestricted vehicle access led to logistical bottlenecks. By prohibiting motorcycles and limiting private vehicle entry, the circuit intends to streamline the flow of traffic and empower police to manage arterial routes more effectively. Attendees without pre-approved parking are advised to rely on public transport, e-hailing, or the provided shuttle services.
To mitigate the impact of these restrictions, SIC has partnered with Rapid KL to deploy 115 shuttle buses across four key hubs: KL International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 2, the KLIA Long-Term Car Park, Mitsui Outlet Park, and Bandar Baru Enstek. Additionally, 30 internal shuttles will operate continuously within the circuit grounds from 7:00 am to 12:00 am throughout the three-day event.
For Malaysian attendees, this shift signals an end to the "first-come, first-served" parking culture that previously defined large-scale events at the circuit. For the average Malaysian consumer, the change demands a higher degree of pre-event planning. Those who rely on motorcycles for their daily commute or preferred transport mode must now factor in the time and costs associated with the shuttle services or e-hailing, potentially increasing the total expenditure for the weekend. For local SMEs operating in the transport and logistics space, the heavy reliance on these shuttle hubs could represent a surge in localized demand, though the logistical rigidity may frustrate those unprepared for the checkpoint screenings.
From an investment and economic standpoint, the decision reflects a maturing approach to event management in a country currently seeing strong economic momentum, evidenced by a 6.0% year-on-year real GDP growth. While inflation remains relatively tempered at 1.9% year-on-year as of August 2026, the cost of personal mobility remains a sensitive issue, particularly with fuel prices standing at RM4.52 per litre for unsubsidised petrol and RM5.27 for diesel as of October 1, 2026. Encouraging the use of mass transit and shuttle systems aligns with the broader national goal of optimizing infrastructure efficiency.
The implementation of these measures will be enforced through strict screening, with KLIA OCPD Asst Comm M. Ravi confirming that roadblocks and traffic diversions are set to be established at eight checkpoints. This move suggests that authorities are prioritizing traffic flow over accessibility for private vehicle owners, likely setting a precedent for how future high-profile events at the circuit will be handled.
While the new traffic management plan is clear on vehicle restrictions, it remains unconfirmed whether these policies will be extended to other, smaller-scale events held at the circuit throughout the year. It is also unclear how the authorities plan to manage the potential overflow of motorcyclists who may attempt to park their vehicles in unauthorized areas outside the designated checkpoints.
