Sepang F1 Race Weekend: Five Security Screening Points Set for Traffic Control

Authorities are implementing strict vehicle access measures and shuttle services for the upcoming Formula 1 event at Sepang International Circuit.

The Sepang International Circuit (SIC) will enforce five strategic vehicle screening points to manage traffic flow during the historic 2026 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, which begins today, October 2.

According to the original publisher, Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar confirmed that the screening points are located at the KLIA toll plaza toward Jalan Pekeliling, KLIA1 toward Jalan Pekeliling, the Masjid Roundabout, the route from Kota Warisan to Labohan Dagang, and the junction at the Enstek traffic lights. All vehicles approaching the circuit will be subject to checks for tickets, vehicle passes, and access stickers to ensure only authorized traffic enters the venue.

A significant deployment of 365 officers from the Selangor traffic investigation and enforcement department (JSPT) will oversee the operation. Their duties will span traffic management, congestion prevention, and VIP escort services. The operation is scheduled to run daily from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, with the primary focus on the race day this Sunday, October 4.

Infrastructure for the event includes parking facilities capable of holding 9,000 vehicles across 17 lots, alongside capacity for 100 buses. To mitigate potential gridlock, officials have issued 200 e-hailing passes to Grab and 100 passes to Prestige Lane, designating the Long Term Car Park and selected hotels as official pickup and drop-off zones.

For the average Malaysian consumer, these measures highlight the logistical challenge of hosting a major international sporting event amidst the country's current economic climate. With real GDP growth standing at 6.0%, high-profile events like this act as significant drivers for the domestic tourism and services sectors. However, for the local worker or commuter, the strict enforcement and potential traffic delays may require significant adjustments to travel plans, particularly for those living or working in the vicinity of KLIA and the Sepang district.

The encouragement for attendees to utilize the 95 MyRapid shuttle buses—supplemented by 50 Grab-operated shuttles—suggests a strategic push to minimize private vehicle reliance. For Malaysian SMEs, particularly those in the transport and logistics sectors, this large-scale event represents a high-demand period. However, with RON95 prices currently at RM2.05 under the SKPS scheme and diesel at RM5.27, transport providers are likely balancing high operational costs against the influx of event-related revenue.

This F1 return occurs during a period of relative stability in the labor market, with the national unemployment rate at 3.0% as of July 2026. The massive deployment of personnel and the activation of shuttle logistics mirror previous large-scale international gatherings in Malaysia, serving as a test for the country's current transport infrastructure and law enforcement coordination.

The event also arrives while headline inflation remains at 1.9%, suggesting that while consumer prices are currently stable, the premium nature of F1-related travel and entertainment remains an elective expense for many local households.

While the police have issued warnings regarding strict enforcement—including summons for non-compliance—it is not yet confirmed what specific penalties will be issued to those attempting to bypass the screening points without proper documentation. Likewise, the exact contingency plans for emergency vehicle access through these five points remain undisclosed.
