Sunway Pyramid Ice Hosts Record-Breaking Skate Asia Competition

Sunway Pyramid Ice has transformed into a regional hub for winter sports as it hosts the 24th edition of Skate Asia. Running from 6 to 16 August, this year marks the largest iteration of the competition, drawing 1,400 skaters representing 38 different rinks from across the Asia-Pacific region.

The event, which is free for the public to attend, features participants competing in over 4,000 individual programmes. According to the original publisher, Sunway Pyramid Ice has served as the host venue for Skate Asia seven times since 1999, solidifying its position as the most consistent venue for this regional sporting event.

The facility’s long-standing history is tied to the success of top Malaysian winter athletes. Both the nation’s first Winter Olympian, Julian Yee, who debuted in 2018, and 2025 SEA Games gold medallist Fang Ze Zeng received their training at this specific rink. These achievements highlight the role of the venue in developing talent within a tropical climate.

As the rink celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, the ongoing operation remains a significant milestone for a country that experiences no natural snow. The consistency of Sunway Pyramid Ice in maintaining a full-sized facility has allowed it to support the growth of competitive figure skating in Malaysia for three decades.
