Taiwan Economy Surges 12.9% Driven by Global AI Hardware Demand

Taiwan's second-quarter economic expansion has outperformed expectations as the island continues to anchor the global artificial intelligence supply chain.

Taiwan’s economy experienced significant growth in the second quarter of 2026, with gross domestic product increasing by 12.9% between April and June. This performance surpassed the median forecast of 10.5% predicted by analysts, according to data released by Taipei’s statistics bureau. While this growth rate marks a slight cooling from the 14.6% expansion recorded in the first quarter, the figures remain robust by international standards.

The primary catalyst for this economic strength is the soaring global demand for artificial intelligence technology. Exports from the island surged 21.6% year-on-year during the second quarter, a trend largely attributed to sustained international demand for AI and related emerging applications. Imports also saw a healthy increase, rising by 18.3% compared to the same period last year, according to the original publisher.

Taiwan remains a global powerhouse in the semiconductor industry, serving as the essential manufacturing base for the components required to train and power modern AI systems. The island hosts hardware production giants such as TSMC, which is responsible for turning Nvidia’s cutting-edge designs into physical silicon components. Additionally, companies like Foxconn play a critical role by assembling the processors necessary to build high-capacity data centre servers.

Economists maintain a positive outlook for the remainder of the year. Gareth Leather, a senior Asia economist at London-based Capital Economics, noted that investment growth is expected to stay strong due to the ambitious plans of major Taiwanese semiconductor firms. The firm has projected that Taiwan’s economy is on track to grow by 14% throughout 2026.

For Malaysian businesses and technology observers, Taiwan's sustained growth underscores the continued vitality of the regional tech supply chain. As the demand for AI hardware shows no signs of slowing, Taiwan’s reliance on advanced manufacturing serves as a bellwether for the broader tech sector, reflecting how critical semiconductor production remains to the global digital economy.
