Tun Mahathir Advocates for Return of Formula 1 to Sepang
Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad suggests that Malaysia should resume hosting the Formula 1 Grand Prix to leverage the existing infrastructure at the Sepang International Circuit.

Speaking on the latest episode of his podcast, DR. M, which aired on August 13, 2026, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad stated that Malaysia should regain its position as a host for Formula 1 races. According to the original publisher, paultan.org, Mahathir argued that the investment in the Sepang International Circuit has already been recouped, allowing the facility to be utilized for future events without the burden of construction costs.
Mahathir addressed concerns regarding the potential expenses associated with hosting the sport. He noted that the value of money has shifted significantly over the years, suggesting that a cost of RM100 million today is comparable to what RM50 million represented in the past. Consequently, he indicated that if he were in government, he would consider the expenditure worthwhile to bring the premier motorsport series back to the country.
However, the financial requirements for securing a permanent slot on the Formula 1 calendar remain significant. Last month, Sepang International Circuit CEO Azhan Shafriman Hanif stated that the nation would need to allocate at least RM300 million annually to host the event. This financial hurdle stands in contrast to Mahathir’s assessment of the current economic climate surrounding the circuit’s operations.
During the podcast, Mahathir also reflected on the historical context of his decision to bring Formula 1 to Malaysia during his first tenure as prime minister. He explained that the initiative was a deliberate strategy intended to boost national tourism and promote the country on the international stage.
The discussion arrives as the Sepang International Circuit prepares to host the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix from October 2 to 4, 2026. For Malaysia, the return of Formula 1 remains a point of interest for its potential to stimulate the local economy and maintain the global visibility of the nation’s premier racing facility.
