Gen Z Malaysians Increasingly Turning to AI for Personal Companionship

Artificial intelligence has transcended its role as a mere productivity tool in Malaysia, with a significant portion of the younger generation now treating AI platforms as personal friends. According to a new study from Kaspersky, 33% of Gen Z respondents in Malaysia engage with AI technology as they would a human companion, seeking emotional support and a space for private discourse.
This finding is part of a broader Kaspersky APAC study examining the rapidly evolving relationship between Gen Z and generative AI tools. The data reveals that AI adoption is deeply embedded in the daily routines of young people across the region, with 50% of Gen Z respondents reporting that they use AI every day or nearly every day. This represents the highest frequency of usage among all demographic groups surveyed.
The utility of AI extends beyond companionship, serving as a pillar for information and academic support. Across the APAC region, 57% of Gen Z users leverage AI for information searches, 54% use it for studying, and 50% rely on it for brainstorming and idea generation. When specifically asked about emotional reliance, 34% of respondents across the region admitted to using AI to discuss personal issues they felt uncomfortable sharing with human peers.
Vietnam reported the highest reliance on AI for personal disclosure at 42%, followed by India at 37% and Indonesia at 36%. Malaysia’s own figure of 33% places it firmly within this regional trend. Furthermore, this trend carries implications for the local workforce and student population. With Malaysia currently maintaining a real GDP growth of 6.0% year-on-year, the digital economy is accelerating, and AI is playing an integral role in this expansion. However, as Gen Z workers and students integrate AI into their personal lives, the risk of "oversharing" in a professional or academic environment could lead to unintended consequences for personal data security and workplace confidentiality.
This behavioral change occurs against a backdrop of a resilient but shifting Malaysian economy. While the headline inflation rate remains relatively stable at 1.8% as of July 2026 and the unemployment rate holds at 3.0%, the digital habits of the youth are outpacing traditional regulatory frameworks. The rapid integration of AI suggests that the government and private sector may need to pivot toward stronger awareness campaigns regarding the "digital footprint" created by emotional AI use.
Looking ahead, this development highlights a growing gap between technological accessibility and individual cybersecurity preparedness. As AI companions become more human-like, the psychological incentive to disclose intimate details will likely rise, potentially complicating current data protection standards.
It remains to be seen how platforms will adjust their privacy policies to accommodate these "emotional" use cases, or if local regulators will introduce specific guidelines to protect users from the risks associated with AI-driven interpersonal engagement. Whether these tools can offer genuine support without compromising personal safety remains an unresolved concern for privacy advocates.
