JomCharge Powers Formula 1 Logistics with Massive 1.4MW Charging Hub at Sepang
EV Connection has scaled up charging infrastructure at Sepang International Circuit to support the private fleet of the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix.

EV Connection, the operator behind the JomCharge network, has successfully deployed 1.4MW of total electric vehicle charging capacity at the Sepang International Circuit. This infrastructure expansion is specifically designed to support the private EV fleet utilized by teams, event partners, and operations crews during this weekend’s Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
The setup at the SIC Motorsport Park is a hybrid installation combining fixed and mobile charging technology to ensure maximum uptime for the event’s mission-critical vehicles. According to the original publisher, the site features a total of 13 DC charging nozzles, providing the necessary energy throughput to keep the fleet operational throughout the high-intensity race weekend.
The technical breakdown of the 1.4MW capacity shows a two-tiered approach. Previously, JomCharge had already installed three fixed JomChargeX DC chargers at the circuit, which offered 360kW of capacity across six nozzles. To meet the surge in demand for the Grand Prix, the provider has added 1,050kW of capacity across seven mobile charging units through a strategic collaboration with Kelle Energy.
While this deployment underscores the growing capability of Malaysian charging providers to handle large-scale, high-power events, it is important to note that these specific chargers are restricted. They are reserved exclusively for the event’s private fleet and are not accessible to the general public during the F1 weekend.
For the Malaysian consumer and EV investor, this development signals a significant maturation in local charging logistics. As Malaysia continues to experience robust economic growth—evidenced by a 6.0% year-on-year real GDP increase in the latest quarter—the ability to deploy mobile, high-capacity charging solutions in short timeframes could become a critical service for large-scale events and fleet management companies.
For local SMEs in the logistics and transport sectors, the integration of mobile charging units like those provided by Kelle Energy suggests a shift in how fleet operators might approach EV adoption. Rather than relying solely on permanent, site-bound infrastructure, businesses may find that hybrid, scalable charging solutions offer a more flexible path to electrifying their fleets, especially in scenarios where energy demand fluctuates significantly.
This deployment sits within a broader domestic landscape where EV adoption is being closely monitored against the backdrop of shifting fuel dynamics. With unsubsidised petrol currently retailing at RM4.52 and diesel at RM5.27 as of the first week of October 2026, the cost-benefit analysis for commercial fleet operators is becoming increasingly skewed toward electrification.
The move by JomCharge also highlights the increasing sophistication of Malaysia’s EV ecosystem. While the country currently maintains a headline inflation rate of 1.9% as of August 2026, investment into high-capacity infrastructure suggests that the sector is prioritizing utility and operational readiness to support long-term transitions toward sustainable transport, even amidst a labour market where 520,300 people remain unemployed.
What remains unconfirmed is whether this mobile charging deployment will serve as a template for future large-scale events at Sepang or other major public venues. It is also unclear whether JomCharge intends to integrate these specific mobile units into their permanent public charging network following the conclusion of the Formula 1 event.
