Proton and Uniqlo Unite for Heritage-Inspired Automotive Fashion Collection
Uniqlo Malaysia’s new UTme! collaboration features hand-drawn illustrations of iconic Proton models by local artist O'matajari.

Uniqlo Malaysia has launched a new collaboration with national carmaker Proton, allowing customers to customise apparel with hand-drawn illustrations of the brand’s most iconic vehicle models. The collection, which is available exclusively through the retailer’s UTme! service, represents a fusion of Malaysian automotive heritage and casual fashion, catering to enthusiasts of the brand.
According to the original publisher, the designs were created by local artist Syaiful Bahri, who works under the professional name O'matajari. The artwork featured in the collection highlights the evolution of the national car brand, ranging from the classic Saga and the rally-inspired Satria Neo to modern staples such as the X50, the S70, and the electric e.MAS 7.
The collection is currently limited to specific physical Uniqlo outlets, including Mid Valley Megamall, Sunway Pyramid, and The Exchange TRX. Customers can select from a variety of T-shirts and tote bags to have their chosen Proton design printed on-site. This customisable approach mirrors Uniqlo’s broader global strategy of integrating localized cultural touchpoints into its retail experience.
This crossover serves as a significant branding exercise for both companies, marking an intersection between the automotive and retail sectors. For Proton, the partnership provides a platform to reinforce brand identity beyond the dealership, positioning its models as cultural icons rather than mere transportation. For the Malaysian consumer, it offers a tangible way to showcase automotive pride through affordable, everyday apparel.
For Malaysian drivers and households, this collaboration arrives during a period of shifting consumer sentiment regarding the automotive sector. With the national economy showing a real GDP growth of 6.0% and a relatively stable unemployment rate of 3.0% as of July 2026, there is evidence of sustained domestic consumption. While headline inflation remains measured at 1.9%, consumers are increasingly conscious of discretionary spending. Merchandise like this allows fans to engage with the Proton brand at a significantly lower price point than the commitment required for a vehicle purchase, especially in an era where fuel costs—such as the unsubsidised RON95 rate of RM4.52—continue to influence vehicle choice.
The inclusion of the e.MAS 7 in the art collection is particularly telling of the current industrial climate. As Malaysia pivots toward greater EV adoption, Proton is working to cement its electric transition in the public consciousness. By placing their upcoming EV model alongside legacy vehicles on a T-shirt, the company is attempting to frame the e.MAS 7 not as an outlier, but as the natural successor to the cars that defined Malaysian motoring history.
From an industry perspective, such collaborations indicate a growing trend of "lifestyle-branding" among domestic manufacturers. By moving into fashion, Proton joins a growing list of entities leveraging intellectual property to build brand affinity across different demographics. This strategy may be essential for long-term growth as the automotive market becomes more crowded and competitive, requiring brands to maintain high visibility in the daily lives of younger, lifestyle-conscious shoppers.
Looking ahead, it remains to be seen whether this collaboration will expand to other Uniqlo locations nationwide or if the designs will be cycled out to make room for new artistic interpretations. Furthermore, the company has not yet disclosed if there are plans to offer these exclusive designs through online channels or if the UTme! personalisation experience will remain strictly an in-store activity.
