Malaysia’s First Graphene-Enhanced EV Battery Plant Set for 2027 Export

Gigafactory Malaysia Sdn Bhd (GMSB), a subsidiary of NanoMalaysia Berhad (NMB), has announced that its new Sepang-based facility will begin large-scale export of homegrown graphene-enhanced lithium-ion batteries in 2027. The plant, located in the Suria Industrial Park, marks a significant milestone in the nation’s journey toward localizing electric vehicle battery manufacturing with an initial production capacity of 1 MWh per year.

The facility spans 15,000 square feet and serves as the operational hub for NMB’s advanced energy storage ambitions. According to the original publisher, the site was showcased during a tour on the final day of the fourth ASEAN Battery Technology Conference, which concluded on August 21, 2026. This move follows reports from July regarding the commencement of small-scale production at the site.

Unlike many operations in the region that rely on the assembly or rebadging of imported cells, GMSB claims its technology is entirely homegrown. The development pipeline traces back to the National Graphene Action Plan 2020, launched in 2014, and the more recent NanoMalaysia Energy Storage Technology Initiative (NESTI) of 2021. The R&D process covers the full spectrum of battery production, including intellectual property, cell engineering, and materials development.

The NESTI programme has been instrumental in diversifying Malaysia’s energy storage portfolio. Beyond standard lithium-ion pouch cells, the initiative has explored water-based aluminium-ion batteries, sodium-ion alternatives, and specialized research into solid-state and metal-organic framework technologies. The Hydrogen Electric Vehicle Battery Centre (HEBATT) continues to operate as the primary hub for this ongoing R&D and fabrication work.

For Malaysian consumers and the automotive industry, this development suggests a potential shift toward reduced dependency on expensive battery imports, which currently comprise a significant portion of EV costs. As the country maintains a 6.0% year-on-year real GDP growth, the localization of high-tech manufacturing could provide a necessary boost to local technical employment. With the national unemployment rate at 3.0%, specialized roles in battery engineering could offer high-value career paths for local graduates.

Furthermore, as the government continues to refine fuel subsidy models—with unsubsidized RON95 currently priced at RM3.77 per litre—the affordability of locally produced EV batteries may be the key to accelerating national EV adoption. For local SMEs, the GMSB ecosystem potentially opens new supply chain opportunities, provided the facility can successfully scale its technology from the current 1 MWh capacity to commercially competitive volumes.

This facility sits within a broader economic push to pivot Malaysia toward high-technology manufacturing. While Malaysia has long been a hub for semiconductor assembly, the move into energy storage represents a strategic transition toward the "green" economy. The country’s commitment to becoming a global graphene innovation hub, initiated via MOSTI and NMB, appears to be entering its commercialization phase after over a decade of foundational research.

Looking ahead, industry observers will be monitoring how GMSB plans to scale its production beyond the initial 1 MWh annual capacity to meet the rising demand for EV components. While the 2027 export target is set, the specific commercial partners, pricing structures for local manufacturers, and the exact supply chain roadmap remain unconfirmed.

What remains to be seen is how effectively the graphene-enhanced technology will compete against established global battery giants in terms of cost-per-kilowatt-hour and cycle life.
