Bank Negara Malaysia to Implement Independent Oversight for MediAsas Product

The central bank aims to ensure the affordability of its upcoming base medical insurance and takaful product through a dedicated independent board.

Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has announced plans to establish an independent oversight board for MediAsas, its base medical and health insurance and takaful product. This framework is designed to manage the product’s long-term affordability as medical inflation continues to impact the sector.

According to the original publisher, the proposed oversight board will represent multiple stakeholder groups. BNM Deputy Governor Aznan Abdul Aziz stated that this structure is intended to support regular reviews of the product’s features and pricing. The move comes as the industry grapples with the persistent rise in healthcare costs across the country.

MediAsas officially entered its pilot phase on 29 July 2026, following its introduction at the Sasana Symposium. The pilot project is currently evaluating key operational processes, including enrolment, underwriting, claims processing, the issuance of guarantee letters, and appointment scheduling. These tests involve collaboration between the central bank, insurance providers, takaful operators, and healthcare stakeholders.

The product remains on schedule for a full public launch in January 2027. Despite extensive prior discussions and preliminary testing, BNM maintains that the current pilot phase and the implementation of independent oversight are necessary steps to ensure the framework functions as intended.

For Malaysian consumers, the development of MediAsas is particularly significant as the central bank expects the product to serve as a benchmark for future medical insurance and takaful offerings. By establishing a framework that prioritizes affordability and transparency, BNM aims to create a more resilient and accessible health protection ecosystem for the public. As healthcare expenses continue to climb, this initiative represents a strategic effort to stabilize the market and provide a standardized baseline for essential medical coverage.
