BYD and Bus Cap Partner to Establish Electric Bus Assembly in Perak

The collaboration aims to develop a local manufacturing facility for new energy commercial vehicles in Malaysia.

BYD Malaysia and Bus Cap Berhad have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a local assembly and manufacturing facility for electric buses in Perak. The partnership focuses on creating a Malaysia-based New Energy Commercial Vehicle platform, marking a significant development for the nation’s growing electric vehicle sector.

According to the original publisher, the initiative leverages the expertise of Bus Cap’s subsidiary, Sin Hock Leong Coach Works (SHL Coach), which has been involved in bus manufacturing since 1968. Given the company's long-standing history and existing industrial base in Perak, the state has been selected as the primary hub for this new collaboration.

Bernard Ng Chong Yan, Executive Director of Bus Cap Berhad, stated that the partnership extends beyond merely introducing electric buses to the country. The project is designed to build a local industrial platform capable of supporting product localisation, assembly, manufacturing, after-sales services, and comprehensive lifecycle mobility solutions.

Beyond the immediate goal of assembling electric buses, the companies indicated that their cooperation will not be limited to a single vehicle type. The joint announcement confirmed that the partners intend to explore the development of other commercial vehicles as part of the broader collaboration.

For the Malaysian automotive landscape, this partnership represents a strategic effort to strengthen the local electric bus ecosystem. By combining BYD’s international expertise in new energy vehicles with established local manufacturing infrastructure, the project aims to support the long-term electrification of public transportation and commercial mobility in Malaysia.
