BYD Launches Limited-Edition Hibiscus Red Sealion 7 for Malaysia Day
To commemorate Malaysia Day, BYD Malaysia has introduced a rare 16-unit exclusive version of its high-performance electric SUV.

BYD Malaysia has officially launched a special Malaysia Day edition of the Sealion 7, featuring a vibrant Hibiscus Red finish. Limited to just 16 units nationwide, this exclusive variant serves as a celebratory tribute to the country, following public sightings of the eye-catching red vehicle in Kuala Lumpur earlier this year which had previously left observers questioning its availability.
According to the original publisher, the Hibiscus Red edition is available exclusively in the Performance AWD configuration. For potential buyers, the vehicle is currently priced at RM197,800 under the BYD Year End Deal. This represents a RM6,000 reduction from the standard recommended retail price of RM203,800. Interested customers are required to secure their units through authorized BYD showrooms.
Under the hood, the Sealion 7 Hibiscus Red retains the technical specifications of the refreshed 2026 model. The vehicle utilizes a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system that delivers a combined output of 390kW (523hp) and 690Nm of torque. This powertrain configuration allows the SUV to accelerate from 0-100km/h in a brisk 4.5 seconds.
The 2026 refresh brings significant hardware upgrades, including a larger 91.39kWh Blade LFP battery. The vehicle now supports 800V architecture, enabling DC fast charging at rates of up to 230kW. In terms of range, the Sealion 7 is rated for 600km on the NEDC cycle, with estimates suggesting a real-world WLTP range of approximately 550km.
For Malaysian consumers, the arrival of such a limited-run model highlights the maturing nature of the local EV market, where manufacturers are increasingly using bespoke aesthetics to build brand cachet. With the cost of unsubsidized RON95 petrol currently hovering at RM4.02 per liter, the shifting economics of personal transportation make high-performance EVs like the Sealion 7 increasingly attractive to affluent buyers looking to hedge against volatile fossil fuel costs.
However, the "limited edition" nature of this release serves as a reminder of the exclusivity gap in the current EV landscape. While Malaysia’s broader economy shows resilience—evidenced by a 6.0% year-on-year real GDP growth—most consumers remain price-sensitive. A sub-200k price tag for a high-performance SUV represents a premium tier, and for the average Malaysian worker, such vehicles remain aspirational luxury items rather than mass-market solutions.
The automotive sector remains a critical component of Malaysia’s transition toward greener infrastructure. Despite a headline inflation rate of 1.8% as of July 2026, which offers some stability for purchasing power, the shift to electric mobility is often dictated by charging infrastructure density and total cost of ownership. The 16-unit limit suggests that BYD is testing the appetite for localized, limited-edition branding before committing to larger, permanent color palette changes for the local market.
As BYD continues to challenge traditional luxury combustion-engine vehicles, the success of this specific promotion may influence future limited-run marketing strategies in the region. The brand has firmly established its presence in the premium segment, and the 800V charging capability addresses one of the primary "range anxiety" hurdles that historically stalled EV adoption in Malaysia.
What remains unconfirmed is whether BYD intends to introduce the Hibiscus Red colorway as a standard option for the 2026 model year in the future, or if this remains a one-time-only release for the Malaysia Day festivities. Interested buyers should contact local dealerships immediately, as the highly restricted supply of 16 units is expected to be allocated quickly.
