EVgo Expands Charging Network to Major American Shopping Centers

Over 500 new DC fast-charging stalls will be installed at retail locations across the United States to improve charging accessibility.

EVgo has announced plans to install more than 500 DC fast-charging stalls at shopping centers throughout the United States. This expansion aims to provide electric vehicle drivers with convenient charging options while they perform daily tasks such as grocery shopping, dining, or running errands.

According to the original publisher, Electrek, the charging infrastructure is being deployed at properties owned by the Brixmor Property Group. These sites are characterized as open-air neighborhood shopping centers rather than traditional enclosed malls, typically anchored by supermarkets or major discount retailers. Brixmor maintains a portfolio of 346 properties across 29 states, featuring tenants such as Kroger, Publix, TJ Maxx, and Ross Stores.

Once the rollout is fully implemented, at least 90 of these shopping centers will be equipped with EVgo fast chargers, representing more than 25 percent of the companyโ€™s total portfolio. Deployment is scheduled to begin later this year, with initial sites planned for states including Florida, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Texas. The first location to receive the new infrastructure is Barn Plaza in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, which is anchored by Whole Foods Market.

Each of the new Brixmor locations is expected to feature up to 12 DC fast-charging stalls. While EVgo has not yet released a complete list of participating sites or specified the exact charging speeds, the project emphasizes the integration of infrastructure into consumer routines. Scott Levitan, executive vice president of growth at EVgo, noted that shopping centers provide an ideal environment for drivers to utilize the 20 to 30 minutes required for charging.

This development highlights a growing trend in the EV sector where charging infrastructure is paired with daily retail activity. For Malaysian observers, the model demonstrates how utility-focused charging partnerships can address range anxiety and convenience by transforming passive parking time into productive vehicle charging sessions.
