Geely Emgrand L EM-i Expands to Australia: A Preview for Proton?

Geely has officially confirmed that its Galaxy Starshine 6 plug-in hybrid sedan will debut in Australia in the first half of 2027 under the name Emgrand L EM-i. The vehicle will serve as a key component of the brand’s regional expansion, joining the Monjaro EM-i and the Battleship 700 to bolster Geely’s electrified offerings in the Australian market.

According to the original publisher, this upcoming sedan is based on the fifth-generation Emgrand platform. The "L" suffix distinguishes it from the fourth-generation model, which remains a fixture in several markets, including Malaysia where it serves as the foundation for the Proton S70. The Emgrand L EM-i represents a significant step up in scale, measuring 4,806 mm in length, 1,886 mm in width, and 1,490 mm in height.

Under the bonnet, the Australian-bound model is expected to feature a performance-oriented powertrain. Geely has indicated a combined output of over 245 PS and 250 Nm of torque. This performance is achieved through the integration of a 190 PS/240 Nm electric motor paired with the 1.5-litre BHE15-BFN naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine, which is already familiar to the Malaysian market through its presence in the Proton eMas 7 PHEV. An 11-in-1 single-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT) manages the power delivery.

Technical specifications for the vehicle are robust, featuring a 17 kWh LFP battery that provides a WLTP-rated EV-only range exceeding 80 km and a total cruising range surpassing 1,000 km. Charging capabilities are equally competitive, with the sedan supporting 30 kW DC fast charging—allowing for a 30 to 80 percent charge in 20 minutes—as well as 3.3 kW AC charging and a 3 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function.

For Malaysian consumers, this development is particularly noteworthy as it fuels speculation regarding a potential "Proton eMas 8" PHEV. As the local automotive industry shifts toward electrification, the introduction of a larger, more powerful plug-in hybrid sedan could provide a strategic alternative to current internal combustion engine offerings. This is especially relevant given the current fuel landscape in Malaysia, where unsubsidized RON95 prices are significantly higher than the subsidized rates under BUDI95 and SKPS, incentivizing drivers to consider more fuel-efficient hybrid or electric alternatives.

Furthermore, with Malaysia’s real GDP growth remaining steady at 6.0 percent and an unemployment rate of 3.0 percent, the purchasing power for new technology and high-end vehicles remains resilient. If Proton chooses to leverage the Emgrand L EM-i platform, it would represent a logical evolution in their collaboration with Geely, offering a premium sedan that bridges the gap between the existing S70 and the growing eMas EV portfolio.
