Gentari Go Charging Failures Highlight Growing Pains for Malaysia’s EV Network

The transition to electric mobility in Malaysia hit a significant snag over the Merdeka weekend, as users of the Gentari Go platform reported widespread, persistent failures across multiple high-speed charging locations. Despite Gentari’s status as one of the nation’s largest charging point operators, the network proved unreliable for drivers during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

According to the original publisher, multiple failed charging attempts were recorded at three separate Gentari sites: Petronas Bayan Baru in Penang, MINI Tian Siang in Ipoh, and XPark Sunway Serene in Petaling Jaya. With fuel prices for unsubsidised RON95 currently at RM3.82 and diesel at RM4.72, the economic incentive to move toward EVs is strong. However, despite a healthy real GDP growth of 6.0% and a stable unemployment rate of 3.0%, the infrastructure sector must keep pace with national ambitions. If the charging experience remains erratic, it could dampen the enthusiasm of early adopters and slow the momentum of the EV transition, regardless of government incentives or subsidy frameworks like BUDI95.

As the industry moves forward, observers will be watching to see if Gentari implements immediate hardware maintenance or software patches to resolve these connectivity loops. Given the rapid expansion of EV ownership, the capacity of these charging hubs to handle peak-period demand is a critical metric for future growth.
