High-Performance BYD Atto 3 AWD Teased for Malaysian Market

The long-awaited all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant of the facelifted BYD Atto 3 is finally set to arrive in Malaysia, filling a notable gap in the local model lineup. Teased by Sime Motors dealer Beyond Auto, the new "Performance" trim aims to transform the popular electric crossover into a high-octane machine with substantial mechanical upgrades.

According to the original publisher, the Performance variant will make its public debut on September 10 at selected Beyond Auto showrooms. This launch follows the June introduction of the facelifted Atto 3 in Malaysia, which was initially restricted to front-wheel-drive Ultra and rear-wheel-drive Premium trims. Prospective buyers should note that this top-tier model will be available in limited quantities.

Under the skin, the Performance model distinguishes itself with a dual-motor setup that generates a combined output of 449 PS (330 kW) and 570 Nm of torque. This represents a significant jump of 136 PS and 190 Nm over the existing RWD Premium trim. These figures translate to a 0–100 km/h sprint time of just 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 200 km/h, positioning the Atto 3 as a serious contender in the performance-oriented EV space.

The vehicle retains the 74.8 kWh Blade LFP battery found in the Premium model. However, the added power output impacts its efficiency, with the WLTP-rated range dropping from 510 km to 470 km. A critical upgrade accompanying this trim is the transition to an 800-volt electrical architecture, which enables DC fast charging at a peak of 220 kW, allowing for a 10 to 80 percent charge in 25 minutes. Other expected features include 18-inch turbine alloy wheels and a potential head-up display.

For the Malaysian consumer, this launch represents a shift in the EV value proposition. While base models have focused on accessibility and daily commuting, the Performance variant targets a segment of drivers who previously viewed EVs primarily as utility vehicles but now seek genuine sports-car acceleration. As Malaysia maintains a robust 6.0 percent real GDP growth, there is a visible appetite for premium consumer goods among the growing middle-to-high income demographic.

However, buyers must weigh these benefits against the broader economic climate. With RON95 petrol prices remaining stable under the targeted subsidy framework and diesel prices hovering at RM4.67, the financial incentive to switch to an EV remains a balance between upfront capital expenditure and long-term running costs. For an SME owner or an individual investor, the decision to opt for the Performance trim will likely come down to whether the jump in performance outweighs the sacrifice in range compared to the more efficient Premium model.

This launch sits within a rapidly evolving local EV landscape that has seen consistent policy support from the government.
