House Destroyed in Alam Damai Following Electric Vehicle Charging Fire

Firefighters responded to a residential fire in Cheras yesterday morning after an electric vehicle caught fire while charging on a porch.

A two-storey residential property in Alam Damai, Cheras, was completely destroyed by a fire early yesterday morning. Authorities believe the blaze originated from an electric vehicle (EV) that was connected to a charger on the home's porch. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported during the incident, which resulted in 100% damage to the structure.

According to the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Assistant Director of Operations, Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar, the emergency call was received at 5:03 AM. A total of 22 personnel from the Cheras, Sungai Besi, and Bandar Tun Razak fire stations were dispatched to the site. The teams successfully contained the fire, and operations were officially concluded at 6:41 AM.

While the official statement from JBPM did not identify the make or model of the vehicle, reports from the original publisher suggest the burnt carcass shares strong physical similarities with a Mercedes-Benz EQE. Visual evidence provided by the department shows the exposed rear structural frame of the vehicle, which appears to match design markers of the EQE, including the outline of the rear hatch opening and the specific configuration of the right taillight structure. These visual characteristics were cross-referenced with images of a Mercedes-Benz EQE involved in a separate underground garage fire that occurred in Incheon, South Korea, in August 2024.

This incident serves as a significant point of discussion for Malaysian EV owners regarding residential charging safety. As the adoption of electric vehicles continues to grow across the nation, ensuring that charging infrastructure is installed correctly and monitored remains a critical concern for homeowners. For the Malaysian public, the investigation into this fire highlights the importance of adhering to safety standards when integrating high-voltage charging systems within private residential properties.
