Johor Factory Shuttered After Flying National Flag Upside Down
A Kulai-based automotive factory had its operating licence suspended by local authorities following the improper display of national and state flags.

Autotech Automotive Malaysia Sdn Bhd, located in Kulai, Johor, has been ordered to cease operations after it was found flying both the Jalur Gemilang and the Johor state flag upside down. The incident, which occurred during the National Month, prompted immediate action from the Kulai Municipal Council (MPKu).
According to the original publisher, enforcement officers arrived at the factory premises to suspend the operating licence and seal the front gates. The enforcement was carried out under the Local Government By-Laws on Trade, Businesses, and Industrial Licensing 2019, specifically citing By-Law 45(1) regarding the proper hoisting of flags and By-Law 49(2) which grants the power to close premises.
While the company took steps to rectify the flag orientation immediately, the suspension of the operating licence remained in effect. State executive councillor Jafni Shukor confirmed the enforcement action, stating that the flags are symbols of national and state sovereignty and dignity. The factory is now prohibited from resuming any business activities until its management submits a formal written explanation to the municipal council.
Authorities noted that they possess the legal authority to apply up to five different laws simultaneously when dealing with the improper display of the national flag. Crucially, the enforcement process does not require the authorities to prove intent before taking initial action against a business entity.
In Malaysia, the month of August is traditionally marked by a nationwide call for citizens and businesses to display the national flag to commemorate independence. Because the flags serve as vital symbols of sovereignty, the government maintains strict regulations regarding their proper handling and presentation. Failure to adhere to these standards, as evidenced by the Kulai incident, can result in swift administrative penalties that impact a company's ability to operate.
