Malaysia and Indonesia Unveil Jointly Developed Nusantara Battery Prototype

Malaysia and Indonesia have officially introduced the Nusantara Battery, a collaborative lithium-ion power pack aimed at advancing regional energy storage technology. The project is led by NanoMalaysia Bhd through its subsidiary, Gigafactory Malaysia Sdn Bhd, alongside Indonesia’s National Battery Research Institute. The partnership was formally showcased during the ongoing 4th ASEAN Battery Technology Conference held in Sepang.

According to the original publisher, the Nusantara Battery is a graphene-infused NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) lithium-ion pouch cell. While two prototypes were presented on stage, technical specifications including energy density, total capacity, and charging performance remain undisclosed. These details are expected to be finalised once the units undergo comprehensive testing procedures.

The development process leverages the unique industrial strengths of both nations. NanoMalaysia Bhd contributed its expertise in battery formulation, advanced graphene technology, and cell development. Conversely, Indonesia provided its extensive experience in the production of NMC active materials, supported by the country's status as the holder of the world's largest nickel reserves.

This joint initiative serves as a strategic pilot to demonstrate the viability of ASEAN-wide cooperation in high-tech manufacturing. By combining Malaysia’s research capabilities with Indonesia’s abundant raw material access, the partners aim to showcase the potential for integrated battery production within Southeast Asia.

For Malaysia, the Nusantara Battery represents a significant milestone in local battery research and development. It highlights the nation's growing role in the regional electric vehicle supply chain and underscores a shift toward collaborative technological advancement.
