Malaysia EV Market Records Triple-Digit Growth in July 2026

Electric vehicle registrations in Malaysia rose by 148.5% year-on-year, with the Proton e.MAS 5 maintaining its position as the top-selling EV.

According to data from the Road Transport Department (JPJ), Malaysia recorded 6,937 electric vehicle (EV) registrations in July 2026. This figure marks a significant 148.5% increase compared to the 2,792 EVs registered during the same month in 2025. EVs now account for 8.67% of the total 80,030 vehicle registrations recorded in the country for July.

For the first seven months of 2026, Malaysia saw a total of 38,675 EV registrations. This represents a growth of 94.0% from the 19,935 units recorded during the same period in 2025. According to the original publisher, the Proton e.MAS 5 remains the number one EV model in the market.

Overall automotive market data shows that total new vehicle registrations for July 2026 reached 80,030, an increase of 5.77% from the 75,663 units recorded in July 2025. While petrol remains the dominant fuel type with 63,754 registrations, it experienced a 3.25% year-on-year decline. In contrast, petrol hybrid registrations saw strong growth, rising 127.20% to reach 5,621 units. Conversely, diesel registrations dropped 45.31% to 140 units, and Green Diesel registrations fell 15.66% to 3,577 units.

Year-to-date, Malaysia has recorded 489,340 total vehicle registrations, a 3.57% increase from the 472,492 units seen during the same seven-month period last year. EVs currently account for 7.90% of total registrations year-to-date.

The data indicates that EV adoption continues to significantly outpace the broader automotive industryโ€™s growth. As EVs capture a larger share of the total market, the shift in consumer preference away from traditional fuel types highlights a clear transition in Malaysia's transport sector toward electrification.
