As digital threats evolve at machine speed, experts warn that Malaysia’s traditional defensive infrastructure requires an immediate shift toward risk-based security models.

Cybersecurity experts are calling for a fundamental restructuring of Malaysia’s national digital defences, warning that the emergence of AI-powered cyberattacks has rendered traditional static protection methods obsolete.

The urgency of this transition follows nearly three decades of national cyber emergency response development, which began with the inception of MyCERT. According to the original publisher, the current threat landscape is evolving at the speed of artificial intelligence, forcing government and private sector stakeholders to move beyond legacy reactive measures in favor of proactive, risk-based security strategies.

While the historical focus of national cybersecurity has been on standard incident response, the complexity of modern threats now requires systems that can anticipate and mitigate risks before breaches occur. This transition involves not only technological upgrades but a complete overhaul of how organisations identify, prioritise, and defend their most critical digital assets against automated and sophisticated AI-driven exploitation.

This requires consistent monitoring and AI-augmented threat detection that matches the pace of the attackers, ensuring that the infrastructure established nearly 30 years ago can survive the realities of the modern digital economy.

If national and corporate defences do not adapt, individuals face a higher risk of large-scale identity theft and data breaches, which can be devastating in an economy where digital transactions are the primary mode of commerce.

Cybersecurity experts argue that a failure to secure the digital layer could undermine recent macroeconomic gains and stifle the efficiency of a labour market where unemployment sits at a healthy 3.0%.

The current inflationary environment, with headline inflation at 1.8%, also places a premium on cost-effective security solutions. For the Malaysian government, the challenge lies in balancing the massive investments required to overhaul national security systems with the fiscal discipline necessary to maintain stable fuel prices, such as the current RON95 rates, while supporting broader economic expansion.

Looking ahead, it remains unclear which specific regulatory frameworks or funding mechanisms the government will implement to enforce this shift toward risk-based defence.
