Malaysia’s Electrified Vehicle Registrations More Than Double in One Year
New data shows that one in every six vehicles registered in Malaysia is now either a hybrid or a fully electric model.

Malaysia has seen a significant shift in its automotive landscape as the share of electrified vehicles registered in the country has more than doubled over the past year. In July 2026, 15.7% of all new vehicle registrations consisted of hybrids or fully electric vehicles (EVs), a substantial increase from the 7.0% recorded in July 2025.
According to the original publisher, this means approximately one in every six new cars registered now features either a plug or a hybrid system. This is a marked change from the previous year, when only one in fourteen newly registered vehicles utilized electrified powertrains. Throughout 2025, the electrified market share remained stagnant between 7% and 9%, before seeing an uptick to 12.4% during the December rush and continuing to trend upward throughout 2026.
Market data reveals that the popularity of electric vehicles and hybrids has converged over the last year. In July 2026, the country recorded 6,937 EV registrations and 5,622 hybrid registrations. While pure electric models have seen a surge in interest, the hybrid segment—bolstered by Japanese marques and models such as the Proton e.MAS 7 PHEV—continues to grow alongside them rather than being displaced.
While petrol-powered vehicles continue to dominate the vast majority of the Malaysian market and are expected to remain the primary fuel source for years to come, the current trajectory suggests a rapid transition. If the current pace of adoption continues, the milestone where one in every five new cars in the country is electrified could be reached in the near future.
This shift reflects a broader transformation in Malaysia's automotive fuel mix, moving beyond individual model headlines to reveal a consistent change in consumer buying habits. As registration numbers continue to climb, the local automotive sector is signaling a clear move toward electrification, providing important insights for industry stakeholders and consumers tracking the evolution of the national car market.
