Malaysia To Pilot Starlink Direct-to-Cell Satellite Connectivity

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has confirmed plans for a trial of Starlink’s satellite-to-phone technology in Malaysia.

Malaysia is set to explore new frontiers in mobile connectivity as Starlink prepares to trial its Direct-to-Cell satellite service in the country. This initiative aims to test technology that allows standard mobile phones to connect directly to satellites, bypassing the need for traditional terrestrial telecommunications infrastructure.

Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil shared the update following a meeting with representatives from the SpaceX-owned provider. The announcement occurred during a memorandum of understanding exchange between the Malaysian Highway Authority and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission. According to the original publisher, the upcoming pilot program will evaluate the feasibility of this technology within the local network environment.

If the trials prove successful, the implementation could offer a critical solution for bridging connectivity gaps in remote regions. By enabling satellite communication on ordinary smartphones, the service aims to provide coverage in areas where installing conventional mobile towers is geographically or economically challenging.

The Minister emphasized the potential of this technology to serve as a significant advancement for national telecommunications. For Malaysian users, particularly those in rural or sparsely populated areas, this development could represent a shift in how mobile access is delivered, potentially reducing reliance on existing tower-based infrastructure in hard-to-reach locations.

The prospect of satellite-to-phone integration marks a notable evolution in Malaysia's connectivity strategy. As the country continues to prioritize digital inclusion, such trials serve as a key step in evaluating whether space-based solutions can effectively supplement existing telco networks to ensure reliable coverage for all citizens.
