MG Malaysia Expands S5 Lineup With New Entry-Level Com Variant

MG Malaysia has expanded its electric vehicle offerings with the launch of the MG S5 Com, a new entry-level variant positioned below the existing Lux model. Priced at RM104,468 on-the-road without insurance, this new addition is designed to lower the barrier to entry for the brand's popular electric crossover.

According to the original publisher, the S5 Com, which stands for Comfort, features a scaled-back powertrain compared to its sibling. It is equipped with a 49 kWh battery pack, providing a WLTP-rated range of up to 340 km. In contrast, the MG S5 Lux, which retails for RM117,528, utilizes a larger 62 kWh battery to achieve a 446 km range. The performance gap is also notable, with the Com variant producing 170 PS and 250 Nm of torque, compared to the Lux variant’s more powerful 203 PS and 350 Nm output.

These mechanical adjustments result in a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of eight seconds for the Com, trailing the seven-second sprint of the Lux. Charging capabilities have also been refined; the Com model supports DC fast charging at 120 kW, whereas the Lux supports up to 150 kW. Both variants retain a 7 kW AC charging capacity.

To achieve the lower price point, MG has omitted several luxury features found in the Lux trim. The Com model swaps ventilated leatherette upholstery for fabric seats and replaces 18-inch alloys with 17-inch black alloy wheels. Convenience features such as the panoramic sunroof, powered tailgate with kick sensor, wireless phone charging, and rear center armrest have been removed. Additionally, the Com relies on a standard reverse camera rather than the 360-degree view system, and its front seats are adjusted manually rather than via the powered mechanism found in the premium trim.

For the Malaysian consumer, this variant represents a significant shift in the value proposition of the MG S5. At approximately RM13,000 cheaper than the Lux, it caters to urban commuters who prioritize daily functionality over long-distance touring or luxury appointments. With Malaysia’s current economic climate—characterized by a robust 6.0% real GDP growth—this entry-level EV may appeal to middle-income buyers looking to transition from internal combustion engines to electric propulsion without committing to a higher price bracket.

However, buyers must weigh these savings against the loss of key driver-assistance and convenience features. While the safety profile remains strong, with both variants sharing seven airbags and the MG Pilot ADAS 2.5 suite, the lack of rain-sensing wipers and powered seat adjustments may influence the long-term comfort of frequent drivers. For Malaysian households currently balancing household budgets against the backdrop of a 1.8% headline inflation rate, the Com variant offers a way to participate in the EV transition while managing monthly repayment commitments.

The introduction of the Com variant arrives as Malaysia continues to refine its domestic EV strategy. As fuel costs fluctuate—with unsubsidized RON95 petrol costing RM3.77 per liter—the total cost of ownership for an EV remains a central topic of conversation for local investors and car buyers. The S5 Com effectively widens MG's footprint in a segment that is becoming increasingly crowded with affordable Chinese-manufactured electric vehicles.

Looking ahead, it remains to be seen how the market will respond to the stripped-back feature list of the Com variant compared to its more feature-rich competitors. While pricing and technical specifications are clear, MG has yet to disclose specific delivery timelines for the Com variant or whether additional service packages will be bundled to enhance its appeal further.
