PIAM Clarifies Insurance Guidelines Following Cheras EV Charging Fire
The national insurance association has provided official guidance on home and vehicle coverage after a recent EV-related residential fire incident.

The General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM) has issued a formal clarification regarding insurance coverage for electric vehicle owners and homeowners. This announcement follows a recent fire in a two-storey terrace house in Alam Damai, Cheras, which was reportedly triggered by an EV being charged at the property. The association aims to clarify how standard policies apply to such incidents to help policyholders understand their protection.
According to the original publisher, standard Houseowner and Fire insurance policies in Malaysia cover damage caused by fire regardless of the source of ignition, provided the claim complies with policy terms and conditions. For those with home charging setups, the distinction between permanent fixtures and portable equipment is critical. Hard-wired EV chargers are typically classified under the buildings section of a home policy as fixtures and fittings, whereas portable cables usually fall under specialised EV motor insurance or specific add-on packages.
PIAM emphasises that professional installation and electrical safety are vital components of maintaining coverage. In the event of a claim, insurers will rely on official investigation reports from the Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat Malaysia to confirm the cause of the fire and rule out issues such as arson, fraud, or non-compliance with statutory regulations, including uncertified electrical modifications.
To ensure full protection, homeowners are strongly advised to notify their insurance providers when installing a permanent EV charger. Declaring any significant electrical upgrades to the property is part of the homeownerโs duty of disclosure. This step ensures that the insurer is aware of the property's status, which is essential for accurate policy assessment.
As Malaysia continues to see a rapid increase in electric vehicle adoption, understanding these insurance implications is increasingly important for local property owners. Ensuring that charging infrastructure meets safety standards and is properly documented with insurance companies provides both financial security and peace of mind for residents transitioning to EV ownership.
