Ringgit Gains Ground Following Strong Q2 GDP Growth Report

Malaysia’s currency opened higher against the US dollar today as positive economic expansion buoyed investor sentiment.

The ringgit opened higher against the US dollar this morning, reaching 4.0830/4.0890 compared to Friday’s closing figure of 4.0840/4.0885. This strengthening comes on the back of Malaysia’s second-quarter 2026 Gross Domestic Product growth, which recorded a stronger-than-expected expansion of 6.0%.

According to the original publisher, Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Afzanizam Rashid noted that the Malaysian economy continues to display resilience. Following the release of the latest GDP data, Afzanizam suggested that the local currency is expected to trade within a range of RM4.07 to RM4.09 throughout the day.

While the domestic growth outlook remains positive, external factors continue to influence currency movements. Geopolitical risks are currently exerting upward pressure on global crude oil prices, which has helped keep the ringgit in a relatively tight trading range against the greenback. Investors remain cautious as they monitor how these energy costs might impact broader inflation trends.

Market participants are also looking ahead to the upcoming US Federal Open Market Committee meeting scheduled for September 15 and 16, 2026. The decisions made during this meeting regarding US monetary policy are expected to be a primary driver for currency fluctuations in the coming weeks.

Against other major currencies, the ringgit’s performance has been mixed. It strengthened against the Japanese yen and the euro, but recorded a slight decline against the British pound. Among regional peers, the local note was marginally higher against the Singapore dollar while retreating against the Thai baht.

For Malaysian businesses and consumers, the ringgit’s performance remains a critical indicator of national economic health. A resilient currency helps manage the cost of imported goods, while strong GDP growth signals a robust domestic market, providing a degree of stability despite the persistent uncertainties in global energy markets and international monetary policies.
