Ringgit Strengthens Against US Dollar Amid Anticipation of FOMC Minutes
The local currency saw late-day gains as investors look for policy signals from the US Federal Reserve.

The ringgit recorded a slight gain against the US dollar during today’s trading session, closing at 4.0565/4.0610 compared to yesterday’s close of 4.0575/4.0615. This upward movement was driven by last-minute buying activity as market participants prepare for the release of the US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting minutes scheduled for later tonight.
According to the original publisher, Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Afzanizam Rashid noted that the market is closely watching these minutes for insights into the US Federal Reserve’s monetary policy stance. Investors are looking for clues regarding the potential for interest rate hikes, which will provide necessary guidance before the upcoming Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium taking place from August 27 to 29.
Despite the gains against the greenback, the ringgit faced downward pressure against a broader basket of international currencies. By the close of the market, the local currency had slipped against the Japanese yen at 2.5498/2.5528 and weakened against the British pound, finishing at 5.4994/5.5055. The ringgit also trended lower against the euro, ending the session at 4.7080/4.7132.
Regional performance for the ringgit was similarly mixed. The local currency weakened against the Singapore dollar, closing at 3.1778/3.1816, and saw slight declines against the Indonesian rupiah and Thai baht. Meanwhile, the ringgit remained flat against the Philippine peso, holding steady at 6.56/6.57.
For Malaysian market observers, the shift in the ringgit’s value against the US dollar remains a key indicator of investor sentiment regarding global interest rate cycles. As the US Federal Reserve’s monetary policy significantly influences international capital flows, the anticipation surrounding the FOMC minutes highlights how closely domestic currency stability is linked to global economic policy adjustments.
