Ringgit Strengthens Against US Dollar Amid Easing Fed Rate Hike Concerns
The Malaysian ringgit posted gains against the greenback as market expectations for a September US interest rate hike continue to decline.

The ringgit extended its positive momentum against the US dollar to close higher during today’s trading session. The local currency reached 4.0575/4.0615 against the greenback, improving from yesterday’s closing position of 4.0585/4.0630.
According to the original publisher, the primary catalyst for this appreciation is the waning anticipation of an interest rate hike by the US Federal Reserve during the upcoming September Federal Open Market Committee meeting. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Afzanizam Rashid noted that this shift in US monetary policy outlook, coupled with overall positive sentiment regarding the Malaysian economy, has effectively weighed on the US dollar.
Economic resilience has further bolstered local market confidence. Finance Minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan reported that Malaysia’s economic growth for the first half of 2026 reached 5.7%, a figure that surpasses Bank Negara Malaysia’s initial full-year projection of 4% to 5%. This strong performance was underpinned by growth rates of 5.4% in the first quarter and 6% in the second quarter.
Despite the recent gains, market observers maintain a cautious outlook. Afzanizam cautioned that sentiment remains fragile, as rising crude oil prices could potentially drive inflation upward by the end of the year. He warned that if inflationary pressures mount, the possibility of a US rate hike could emerge once again.
The ringgit’s performance was not limited to the US dollar; the local currency also strengthened against other major global currencies. By the 6pm close, the ringgit had risen against the Japanese yen, the British pound, and the euro.
For Malaysian businesses and investors, the ringgit's recent performance reflects the country's robust economic trajectory. Sustained currency strength helps manage the cost of imports and stabilizes the purchasing power of the ringgit, though market participants remain watchful of external global inflationary pressures that could influence future exchange rate volatility.
