Updated Volvo EX90 to Arrive in Malaysia with 800V Architecture

Volvo Car Malaysia has officially confirmed that the updated Volvo EX90 is set for an imminent local launch. This iteration of the electric SUV, which debuted globally last year, introduces a significant technological shift by transitioning from a 400-volt to an 800-volt electrical architecture.

According to the original publisher, this upgrade substantially improves the vehicle's charging performance. While the battery capacity remains steady at 111 kWh, the shift to an 800-volt system allows the EX90 to support DC fast charging up to 350 kW, an increase from the previous 250 kW limit. Consequently, the time required to charge from 10% to 80% has been reduced from 30 minutes to 22 minutes. Additionally, drivers can now add up to 250 km of range in 10 minutes, compared to the 180 km offered by the earlier model.

The transition to 800-volt technology also enhances the powertrain performance. The updated Twin Motor Performance model now produces 680 PS and 870 Nm of torque. Despite a slight reduction in peak torque compared to the previous 517 PS version, the new model achieves a 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.2 seconds, shaving 0.7 seconds off the previous time. This improvement is attributed to the increased horsepower and weight savings achieved through thinner internal wiring. AC charging remains capped at 11 kW, with an expected WLTP-rated range of approximately 623 km.

This update represents a notable leap in EV technology for the Malaysian market, moving toward higher-voltage systems that minimize charging downtime. For local consumers, the focus on faster charging speeds and improved acceleration highlights Volvo’s strategy to keep its flagship SUV competitive as charging infrastructure continues to evolve across the country.
