Johor’s Desaru Coast to Host RM10 Million International Karting Circuit

Singapore-based Arina International is investing in a new high-speed leisure destination to boost cross-border tourism by late 2026.

Construction is currently underway on a new RM10 million karting circuit at Desaru Coast in Johor, with the facility slated to open its doors by the end of 2026. According to the original publisher, the project is being executed under a lease-and-build investment model by Singapore-based Arina International Holding, aiming to solidify the coastal destination as a regional hub for both motorsport enthusiasts and leisure seekers.

The circuit will be located at Riverside, forming a key component of The Sports Arina, an integrated sports and leisure complex. Once completed, the facility will feature a competitive-grade karting track equipped with professional-standard karts and an advanced electronic timing system. Complementing the adult-focused track is an air-conditioned KF Kiddy Circuit, specifically designed for children aged four to 12.

Beyond the track itself, the developers have integrated support infrastructure to enhance the visitor experience. The plans include dedicated spectator seating, various dining areas, and merchandise outlets. Arina International intends to cater to a diverse clientele ranging from recreational drivers to corporate groups, with a structured calendar of race packages and organised events. The kiddy circuit will also offer individual sessions and birthday party packages.

The expansion at Riverside is already in motion. The site has been active since July, when the first phase introduced three outdoor pickleball courts. Future expansion plans for the site include the addition of three more pickleball courts and specialized padel facilities, marking a broader shift toward diverse, high-growth recreational sports in the southern region.

For Malaysian consumers and investors, this development signals a strategic effort to capture the growing cross-border leisure market. With Malaysia’s real GDP growing at a strong 6.0% year-on-year, discretionary spending on tourism and niche sports is poised to remain resilient. The facility’s proximity to Singapore, combined with its appeal to local residents, suggests a potential boost for local employment in the service and hospitality sectors, helping to sustain momentum in the regional labour market, where the national unemployment rate stands at 3.0%.

For local SMEs, the arrival of such a project creates a downstream demand for suppliers, ranging from F&B services to facility maintenance. As visitors travel from both Malaysia and Singapore to access the site, regional infrastructure may see increased utilisation. However, consumers should remain mindful of the current economic climate; while the economy is growing, the cost of transport—with unsubsidised RON95 reaching RM4.02 per litre—remains a factor for those driving from outside the Johor region to reach the coast.

The project adds to a growing portfolio of leisure assets in Desaru, which already hosts the Adventure Waterpark and the 45-hole golf offering at The Els Club. Arina International brings significant experience to the venture, having operated the KF1 Karting brand and five kiddy-focused outlets across Johor and Kuala Lumpur, alongside their existing Sports Arina facility in Jalan Kayu, Singapore. The company has also maintained a long-standing involvement with the Singapore Formula 1 Grand Prix since 2008.

Despite the firm opening date target of late 2026, several details remain unconfirmed. The specific pricing structure for race packages, the exact total area of the circuit, and any potential partnerships with local tourism boards have not been disclosed. As the construction phase continues over the next 15 months, prospective visitors will be looking for further updates on how the facility will integrate with existing transport links in the Desaru area.
