The research highlights that while many firms have successfully integrated automated tools, these efforts remain largely superficial. Companies appear to be prioritizing low-hanging fruit—such as automated email responses or basic data entry—instead of scaling AI to improve product innovation, predictive analytics, or complex decision-making.

For Malaysian SMEs and investors, the current landscape offers a clear opportunity for competitive differentiation. Businesses that can move beyond basic AI tasks and successfully deploy integrated solutions may be better positioned to navigate rising operational costs, such as the current unsubsidized fuel price of RM3.77 for petrol. By moving from simple automation to strategic AI scaling, companies could improve margins and provide a buffer against broader inflationary pressures, which currently sit at 1.8% year-on-year.
This trend fits into the government’s broader push for digital-first growth, but it indicates that the next phase of the industry’s evolution must be focused on capacity building. The jump from 3.4 million adopters to 3.4 million sophisticated AI users will likely require a shift in how local firms view the technology—from a cost-saving utility to a fundamental pillar of business intelligence.
Looking ahead, the industry will need to monitor whether the current focus on basic tools leads to a "dead end" in technological maturity or if it serves as a necessary trial phase for deeper, long-term investments.
