MIROS Launches Three-Month Trial For Highway Minimum Advisory Speed Limits

The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research is testing advisory speed guidelines to manage lane discipline on three national highways.

The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) has officially commenced a three-month pilot project aimed at addressing the issue of lane hogging on Malaysian highways. The initiative, which began on 1 August 2026, seeks to introduce minimum advisory speed limits across selected routes to encourage motorists to better align their vehicle speeds with the specific lanes they occupy.

According to the original publisher, the proof-of-concept project is scheduled to run until 31 October 2026. Throughout this period, MIROS will be actively monitoring traffic conditions and gathering data to evaluate how drivers respond to the new guidelines. The study aims to determine the effectiveness of these advisory limits in discouraging slow-moving vehicles from occupying the rightmost lane, which often disrupts the flow of traffic on high-speed roads.

Under the current trial, the recommended minimum speeds will vary depending on the specific lane being used by the motorist. It is important to note that these figures are strictly advisory rather than mandatory. By providing these recommendations, MIROS hopes to foster a culture where drivers select their lanes based on their travelling speed rather than remaining in the fast lane at speeds significantly lower than the surrounding traffic.

Following the conclusion of the trial in late October, the collected data will be analyzed to assess the overall impact of the pilot program. MIROS will use these findings to determine whether this advisory approach yields sufficient improvements in traffic management to warrant a broader implementation.

This project addresses a common frustration among Malaysian motorists regarding highway efficiency and safety.
