Proton has officially reintroduced its hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) powertrain at the Global Automotive and Technology Expo (GATE) 2026, marking a significant step toward mass-market production by moving away from the previously discarded FutureMotion branding.
According to the original publisher, the system is a localized iteration of Geely’s established i-HEV technology. While the architecture shares common DNA with the eMas 7 PHEV, the Proton variant is configured as a non-plug-in hybrid, omitting the large 18.4/29.8 kWh Aegis short blade LFP battery pack found in its PHEV sibling. The powertrain is built around a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine designated as a dedicated hybrid engine (DHE).
Technical specifications displayed at the expo highlight the engine’s specialized design, which operates on an Atkinson cycle full-time. Unlike the turbo-charged i-GT engines currently powering the X50 or the standard Saga, this DHE features single VVT and a modified block. To optimize mechanical efficiency, the system utilizes an electrically-powered alternator and air-con compressor, effectively eliminating the auxiliary belt. Supplemental cooling is managed by an electric water pump, a feature already familiar to current Saga owners.
The data presented at GATE 2026 reveals a power output of 111 PS and 136 Nm of torque, consistent with the Geely Preface i-HEV in China. Key efficiency metrics are equally noteworthy, including a 14:1 compression ratio, 46.5% thermal efficiency, and a 97.5% transmission efficiency. These specifications suggest that Proton is focusing on refinement and long-term durability as it prepares the system for its maiden appearance in the AMA02, an upcoming A-segment SUV widely speculated to be a successor or stablemate to the Saga.
For the average Malaysian driver, the arrival of this localized hybrid technology arrives at a critical juncture. With unsubsidised petrol currently priced at RM3.77 per litre, the integration of a highly efficient hybrid system into an A-segment vehicle—traditionally the entry point for most Malaysian car buyers—could serve as a vital hedge against fuel price volatility. By moving toward DHE technology, Proton is positioning itself to offer an accessible electrified experience for consumers who are not yet prepared to transition fully to battery electric vehicles due to charging infrastructure concerns.

The transition to beltless engine architectures and integrated electric auxiliaries requires a shift in maintenance standards and part manufacturing. As Proton deepens its technical alignment with Geely’s i-HEV platform, local component suppliers will need to pivot their capabilities to support these high-efficiency mechanical requirements, potentially fostering a new tier of specialized automotive engineering expertise within the domestic workforce.
The broader economic environment supports this push for efficiency. Malaysia’s real GDP growth of 6.0% suggests a healthy appetite for new vehicles, and the national unemployment rate of 3.0% indicates a stable labour market capable of supporting new car purchases. As the government continues to manage fuel subsidies through the BUDI95 and SKPS programs, the shift toward fuel-sipping hybrids like the AMA02 aligns with broader national efforts to balance economic growth with environmental and fiscal sustainability.
However, many details regarding the AMA02 remain unconfirmed. Proton has yet to disclose specific pricing strategies, final trim levels, or a confirmed launch date for the vehicle. While the powertrain’s technical capabilities are now clear, how these will translate into real-world fuel consumption figures on Malaysian roads and how the company will position the vehicle against existing budget-friendly competitors remains a matter of industry speculation.
